How to prepare pool accessories for winter

To ensure that pool accessories remain in good condition during freezing winter temperatures, it's important to prepare not only the pool itself but also the sand filter, heat pump, skimmer, pool lights, and other equipment. We've already explained how to winterize the pool in the previous post. Now, let's go through the basic recommendations for properly securing pool accessories for the winter.

How to winterize sand filtration:

  • Start by rinsing out any remaining sand in the filtration system. Make sure to also clean the coarse sieve of the pump and other components.

  • Disconnect the filtration system from the power source.

  • Now, dismantle the pipes and hoses, and pour out any remaining water. If your filtration system has this setting, adjust the valve lever to the WINTER position. For a 6-way valve, leave the valve lever in any intermediate position.

  • Use a lever to compress and remove water from the valve.

  • Store the pump, valve, and other components of the sand filtration system in a dry place, away from freezing temperatures, for the winter season.

How to winterize a solar heater:

  • Disconnect the solar panels from the electrical wiring.
  • Carefully suction out the water from the panels.

Don't forget about pool lighting, skimmers, and steps:

  • To remove pool lights and reflectors, first remove the central plastic frame and unscrew the screw underneath it. Then, simply take out the light and release the connecting cable.
  • From the skimmer, first remove the debris basket. Then, you can fill this space with empty, compressed PET bottles or expansion floats to prevent damage to the skimmer from ice.
  • Remove, clean, and store the pool steps.

After disconnecting, store all pool accessories in a dry place where the temperature does not drop below freezing!
